NASCAR and Police Scanners

Just a few weeks ago the 2021 NASCAR season kicked off, what a perfect time for a blog entry about NASCAR. I’ve only been to a few tracks, New Hampshire, Las Vegas, and now Charlotte Motor Speedway. Now I live in the epicenter of NASCAR. I’m right up the road from Charlotte Motor Speedway, the Hall of Fame, and surrounded by the race shops. I haven’t yet run into one of the drivers in the supermarket. I’ve been watching NASCAR on TV since I was a little boy. I remember going to Seekonk Speedway seeing the local racers with my Dad. This semi-banked 1/3 mile asphalt-paved oval is located in Seekonk, Massachusetts. It would be some years later I would attend my first NASCAR cup race at New Hampshire Motor Speedway. Searching for Distant Signals

Ever since I was young I’ve had this fascination with communications from two-way radios to broadcasting. I hope to share some of my personal stories that involve scanners, two-way radios, and broadcasting in The Scanner Guys blog. Growing up in the ’80s and 90’s I didn’t have all the cool things kids have nowadays. I did have something pretty cool, my yellow Sony Walkman Sport (FS439) with a digital tune, and who could forget “Mega Bass”. I filled the presets with all the stations in both Boston and Providence radio markets. I learned the call letters, slogans, and which announcers were on what stations. This is when I started to get some interest in Dxing. One day I stumbled across 94.9 WHOM. I remember the first time I heard them do their Top of hour ID “biggest FM radio station in North America covering 5 states and parts of Canada” I was like wow!
